Good morning everyone. Welcome to Learn to Daven - Day 5.

Yesterday we talked about Asher Yatzar as a whole - the body blessing, and the audacity of saying something so holy in such an ordinary moment. Today I want to slow down and look at one strange little phrase in the middle of it, because once you see what it's doing, you'll never say this bracha on autopilot again.

Listen to the Hebrew: u'vara vo n'kavim n'kavim, chalulim chalulim. God created in the human being "openings, openings - cavities, cavities." Notice the words are doubled. Not "openings and cavities." N'kavim n'kavim. Chalulim chalulim. Repeated.

Why the repetition? The simple answer is that it's the Hebrew way of saying "many" - openings upon openings, cavities upon cavities. But the doubling does something to your ear. It makes you feel the plurality of it. You are not one simple thing. You are a vast, layered system of passages and hollows, each one with a job, each one set to a precise state - this one open, this one closed, this one a channel, this one a chamber.

And then comes the line that should stop us cold every single time. Galui v'yadua lifnei chisei ch'vodecha - it is revealed and known before Your throne of glory - she'im yipase'ach echad mehem o yisasem echad mehem - that if just one of them were to open that should be closed, or one were to close that should be open - i efshar l'hiskayem - it would be impossible to survive. Afilu sha'ah echas. Not even for one hour.

One valve. One passage. The margin between a normal Tuesday and a hospital is a single channel staying the way it's supposed to be. And here's the miracle: it stays. Hour after hour, year after year, your body holds ten thousand balances in perfect tension and you give it not one thought.

Doctors today have a word for this. They call it homeostasis - the body's relentless, invisible work of keeping everything in balance. Your temperature, your blood pressure, your chemistry, every passage open and closed exactly as it should be. It is happening inside you right now, and the entire genius of it is that you don't feel it. Asher Yatzar is, in a sense, the oldest gratitude there is - for the miracle you were specifically designed not to notice.

That word - galui v'yadua, revealed and known before Your throne - is doing heavy lifting. It means: I can't see this. I have no idea what's happening inside me. But You see it. It is laid open before You. The balance I take for granted is something the King of the universe is actively aware of, this very second.

Now here's the Chassidic jewel, and it's hidden in the very last words: u'maflee la'asos - "and acts wondrously." On the surface it means God does wonders in the body. But the Chassidic masters read it deeper. The greatest wonder - the maflee, the truly astonishing thing - is how God keeps the neshamah, a piece of the Divine, an utterly spiritual soul, bound inside a physical body of openings and cavities. Spirit and flesh have nothing in common. They should not be able to coexist for a moment. And yet they're fused, every second, for a lifetime. That's the real wonder. Not just that the plumbing works - but that something infinite agreed to live inside something finite, and to stay.

So that doubled phrase isn't just biology. It's the daily, unfelt miracle of a body that holds - and of a soul that holds on inside it.
