Day 1

Modeh Ani - The First Words

מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי בְּחֶמְלָה, רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ

Modeh ani l'fanecha, melech chai v'kayam, shehechezarta bi nishmati b'chemlah, rabbah emunasecha.

I give thanks before You, living and eternal King, for You have returned my soul within me with compassion - great is Your faithfulness.

Twelve words, and the first two are in the wrong order. Normal Hebrew would be ani modeh, I thank. It is reversed, so the thanks arrives before the I does, before your ego is awake enough to get in the way.

And there is no name of God in the sentence. Not once. You cannot say it before you wash in the morning, so the first line of the day was built to work while you are still, technically, not ready.

  • Talmud Berachot 60b (morning blessings sequence)
  • Siddur Im Dach (Alter Rebbe) - placement of Modeh Ani
  • Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 1:2 - obligation to say Modeh Ani immediately upon waking

162 sessions are in the app right now. The curriculum runs 312.

What each day gives you

Every session takes one line or one idea and opens it up.

  • The Hebrew, large and unhurried, with full nikkud
  • Transliteration you can toggle on when you want it
  • A clear English translation
  • A short spoken teaching, in the tone of a friend who happens to know this stuff
  • A longer written entry to sit with
  • The sources, so you can look it up yourself

Story Mode

Every session is also a swipeable, full screen deck. Tap through it like a story on your phone, one idea at a time, in about the length of a coffee.

Siddur Mode

The weekday morning service, page by page, in your nusach: Ashkenaz, Sefard or Edot HaMizrach. Any line the series has taught carries a quiet gold underline. Tap it and the teaching opens. The siddur you daven from is the same object you learn from.
